Japan's Long Shadow: The Unresolved Legacy of Comfort Women

2ND PLACE NATIONAL HISTORY DAY CHINA

Thesis: Driven by patriarchal, nationalist, and xenophobic ideologies, the forced sexualenslavement of comfort women—women from Korea, China, and various Southeast Asian nations—by Japanese Imperial forces during World War II violated the fundamental human rights of its victims and weaponized suffering for political gain. While financial reparations and apologies have been attempted, they often fall short of the international community’s and Japan’s deeper legal, moral, and political responsibility to ensure truth, justice, and remembrance. This ongoing struggle reflects the persistent gap between acknowledging historical rights violations and the responsibility of nations to confront past atrocities with accountability and integrity.
